Just start scraping your knife against stuff. Don't worry about the angle of the edge or anything. It'll be sharp in no time!

To anyone actually considering copying any of this... NO! These methods are guaranteed to destroy your blade! Ideally use a whetstone but you can get even a basic knife sharpener for a fraction of the cost of any of these parts, and avoid all the risks.

None of these methods will result in razor sharp edge. If you really don't want to get proper wetstone, you can use bottom of a coffee mug as a wetstone. Look for the area that has non-glossy part (usually the edge rim), put some water on it and use it as wetstone. The porcelain material will be harder than steel and the bottom surface is typically straight so that will do in a hurry.
Mikko Rantalainen
Mikko Rantalainen 2 ай бұрын
@ZanesFacebook If the bottom has raw ceramic surface, it can definitely cut the blade for real instead of just straightening the blade (which is also important!). If I do that with my mug, I get dark slurry which is small particles of the blade's edge removed from the blade.
ZanesFacebook
ZanesFacebook 2 ай бұрын
The coffee mug doesn't do much for sharpening, but it does work well to hone the blade. If it's truly fucked and needs to be sharpened, it won't work. But if the edge just needs to be straightened again it's definitely effective. I did this for years with my kitchen knives, and I'm still using the same ones 7 years later. So it doesn't damage the blade either

@petrolhead1987 I fully agree. If you have a nice knife, getting a real wetstone and learning to use it should be a sensible investment. Also having some clue what to do with your tools would be great. For example, this video shows the author cutting sandpaper with scissors. If the target is to destroy the scissors, great work.
petrolhead1987
petrolhead1987 2 ай бұрын
I agree that this method works when you are in desperate need of a temporary sharp edge, same goes for using the edge of a car window. But I would never use this method for routine sharpening of knives, as it can be very coarse and result in a shorter lifespan of your blade.

Nothing wrong with sandpaper except that it wears out relatively quickly and needs to be replaced. A whetstone is virtually the same thing, but lasts exponentially longer.

I have a cousin was raised rough by his Ranger Korean war combat veteran, we worked roofing together installing cedar roofs as kids. One time he took his plumb hatchet and ran a mill file (we always kept it good little mill bastard file somewhere) and ran it square against the blade, a tried to stop him and he said no, that's what you do in an emergency. I figure now some old WWII instructor taught his Dad to do this right about the time the ammo runs out

Since you used the same knife, and I can see it's the same knife due to the scratch marks from the sandpaper and DeWalt method which I would never use, how do we know it wasn't 1. Pre-sharpened (factory sharpened or 2. Sharpened by way of the first method. and the other methods such as the lighter striker, which I would never use on any of my blades, actually work?

It doesn't matter if a knife was sharpened before, the second it touches a new abrasive, it becomes dull through the formation of a burr. If it's hard enough to abrade the steel, it will sharpen the steel. How well is an entirely different question, only the sandpaper would work well in my opinion, and I wouldn't use it on a drill, I would lay it on something flat then sharpen on that, much better results.

Just buy a knife sharpener because unless you're a professional chef who has their extremely expensive cutlery(THEIR TOOLS).. You are fine just using a $8-20 basic sharpener or just buy another knife.... It costs you so much more in time and labor and gas for your vehicle to go to home Depot and get these life hack pieces. However, if you already happen to own all these items and can assemble them to make a make shift sharpener for your shitty knife, by all means.. have at it.... Be smart people
