I would suggest holding these things with tweezers whenever cyanoacrylate (super glue) is being used. Also, the baking soda thing can be improved by using graphite, if you don't need the end product to be white. Additionally, the bicarbonate (baking soda) can be colored to match with things like a little mica powder, too - but do a test spot first, on a piece of scrap, to be sure of the color. The glue alters the colors a bit. Edited to add: @ about 3:25 or so, spreading open the zipper mechanism shouldn't be necessary UNLESS the end piece (like is on the bottom of a jacket) is completely unreachable. Often, on a tote bag or the like, the piece is there, but buried a bit at the end, and can be reached by snipping a few threads from the inside. Always check, because doing what is shown weakens the metal. Also, it isn't nearly as simple with a plastic zipper, so you have to hope the end piece is accessible.

Zips come in different colours. To make baking soda / bicarbonate of soda + cyanoacrylate / superglue match the colour, mica powder dye can be added. Additionally, mixing powdered pencil lead (pure graphite works better) with the baking powder gives an even stronger end result.

WHOA! My mind is more than boggled--it's absolutely buggered! Thank you. I've found that you can also make an eycatching zipper pull from a favorite keychain fob or necklace pendant. And I've loosened up many a balky metal zipper with wax--rubbing an old wax candle stub up and down the teeth will make the zipper pull glide along the track.

Pretty good tips. However, if the zipper needs to be "fixed" with the pliers, it will fail soon again. This is because that failure model is caused by metal fatique and every time you bend that metal, it gets weaker and will bend again even easier.

Anyone doing the last one bear in mind that zipper metal is a little brittle so you will probably only get a couple of chaces to open one side and close it again. Do it too many times and it will braek open where you're prising it or more likely snap when you're trying to close it back up. By the way, discovering the uses for instant plastic made with baking soda (and/or crushed pencil graphite) and superglue has been very useful in a variety of situations for me.

FYI- you can purchase zipper pull tabs without the teeth. Most problems can be solved by replacing the pull tab. You will also need to replace the zipper stop, but that is pretty easy too.

With metal zips, cheap metal tends to be used, so be wary of opening them too much or doing so repeatedly as they will break through metal fatigue.

I've used the paper clip trick before, but I also use some heat shrink tubing to close it off. The thread and CA glue looks interesting, but takes more effort than I want to invest. The pencil trick is interesting. I'm assuming it works like graphite powder lubricant for locks.

Excellent tips! I use a candle instead of a pencil - rub the candle on the teeth. Zipper will glide easily. And won't stain your clothes below.

I've been using the paper clip & keyring idea for zipper-pull replacements for 40+ yrs because of certain difficulties I have holding onto smaller pull tabs. But I wasn't surprised to see some powder & super glue used yet again! LOL!!

None of these worked for me but it inspired me to try something different. The zipper on my carhartt jacket wouldn’t lock in and allow it to function. If I managed to get it locked in, it was difficult to remove. Took a metal file to the part that inserts into the zipper pulls and was able to free up the movement. Kept filing until I got smooth results. Had to file in different areas to determine where exactly it was catching. A little trial and error and it’s good to go!

the last thing doesn`t work that easy, because left and right side now have different lengths to the zeropoint. For open zippers you may be able to open and fix it, but closed zippers like in boots won't work that easy. BUT beside of that, i really like your content.

It's difficult to get the runner tensioned right without breaking it. I found adjustable (plumbing) pliers easier for this than normal pliers, because they don't slip, and allow much more fine control.

Okay some good ideas. Pencil lead is difficult to remove from fabric, maybe a wax or wipe on vinyl repair or just plain WD-40 wiped on. Zip teeth have to be aligned or the a zip will be wavy or just plain a pain. Please be sure of what zip teeth are made of before attempting.

I've used this same technique for repair laser cut RC airplanes. Fills corners to keep from collapsing during crashes.

the last one is more likely to break the zipper than that it works like that. these carriers don't like it if they are opened and bend that far. it really weakens the middle connector and stuff like problem two will appear faster and faster each time you press it together or pull it apart with a screwdriver

Does anyone have any remedies for when you accidently zip two items together? I was wearing a gilet with a zip under a jacket with a zip & was in a carol service with candles & I was cold & thought I was zipping up my jacket but accidentally zipped the rwo items together. Now the two zips seem totally stuck. Is there any solution other than paying a seamstress to put in new zips?

Nice... I've bought replacement zippers, and zipper pulls, now if only the video showed how to get around replacing the whole zipper when the teeth start breaking off. Of course the pliers only work on metal zippers, and of course the metal isn't that good, so if you bend your zipper too much it will break...been there, done that so I try to avoid using the pliers. And I've bent the zipper foot too snugly tight so then you can't move the zipper...the key thing is that you never damage the teeth...you can buy a replacement zipper but you have to guess what size you need and unless it's Amazon Prime, it's too expensive to buy multiple replacement sizes. . I am staring at a backpack right now that has a broken zipper, it's a laptop backpack that unzips all the way for airport scanning and I was walking away from my desk when the zipper failed and I heard everything in that compartment (papers and folders) fall to the ground, luckily I used the velcro strap that holds my laptop in place...so I suggest that if you have a similar backpack, you use a cord and toggle or bungee and toggle system as a backup to keep the two halves together if the backpack computer compartment zipper fails (I have 2 handles at the top, one attached to the computer pocket side, and the other is the regular grab handle). I normally have a soft shackle setup on my grab handle so that I can hang my backpack off the ground (good for public bathrooms and when you're on a boat in the rain) and I recently attached a toggle/bungee extension (toggle is a round dowel with a hole that acts like a button, you can buy it on Amazon) to the soft shackle so it's easier to secure my jacket when I don't need it but don't want to put it in my backpack. I managed to get the zipper foot back on both sides, and for now, I just avoid the broken teeth (I have 2 zipper feet on that compartment) and use 2 soft shackle/toggles until I transfer everything to the other backpack that's sitting right next to it...yes, I'm lazy.

zipper slides are made of soft metal. you have to be careful with the pliers or you will break the slide

locally, we still have a taylor shop that would replace most zippers for around $10. Guessing it's an imported part that he can buy for a $1.00.

You can buy sets just for fixing zippers, usually tools are included with lots of spare parts. But hey, knock yourself out.
